5 Stars Great Stock Market Book
John Boik presents a well thought out method for acquiring wealth. The big money he claims is made in finding those few companies who can change the world. If an investor can recognize these monster stocks and manage them correctly, the result will be life changing wealth. Boik gives the reader a history lesson–that all monster stocks display the same characteristics just the names of the companies and their symbols change.

4 Stars Practical Rules for Growth Stock Investing.
Boik’s term “Monster Stocks” refers to stocks that have at least doubled in price within 18 months. This book describes the practical application of a set of rules for identifying and profiting from such high-growth stocks. These rules involve criteria both for a stock’s fundamentals, and subtle details of price and volume action of the stock and of the general market.

What I liked about the book is that it profiles about 30 such stocks as brief case studies, which include the chart basing setups that may have been evident, key points and characteristics of corrections during the stock’s growth, and indications that presaged of the end of their run-ups. These are accompanied with annotated charts of relevant market indices and of the stocks profiled. The attendant commentary on these particular growth stocks and the events in the markets allowed me to learn by comparing the rules to how I would have reacted in the same situation. Most of the examples occur during the period 1996 through 2006.

Much of the methodology aligns with and makes mention of the Investor’s Business Daily rules as described in their educational material and in Bill O’Neil’s books. This book builds on IBD’s teachings in that it uses the methods to focus on the special case of stocks that at least double in price including the psychological challenges, buying and pyramiding tactics, and the significance of moving-average support.

Boik describes methods that are relatively simple, but adds that the attention to detail and discipline required is not easy. I know from experience that many of us will find it difficult to make a large commitment to a high-growth stock, at least in its early stages, because the characteristics go against much of the conventional wisdom. Many investors will sell such a stock when it makes violent corrections - only to watch it make new highs soon thereafter. Similarly, it takes great discipline to act on the various warning signs and sell even though the stock is making successive new highs and the fundamentals have never been better. Boik does a reasonable job of explaining the details of what to observe, and rules by which to buy, add more, sell or hold these stocks through such observations. Among other things, the rules limit your risk and provide assurance when holding such stocks during their growth phase.

The book concludes with a Monster Stock finding and handling template, and a summary of the Monster Stock rules.

A criticism that led me to rate this book four stars instead of five was that the writing style tended to be wordy and repetitive, making the book longer than it needed to be. Also, the graphics were sometimes difficult to follow, and required some study before I was able to relate them to the text. I was able to endure this however, and found a lot of valuable content.

I can also recommend the following to those wanting more on growth stock investing:

The Market Wizard series of three books by Jack D. Schwager

1 Star Disappointed
I had previously purchased his other two books. The first covered the best US traders (this is a very good book) and the second book covered the US equity market and the best US traders through history, this book also was pretty good in terms of detail and explanation. His current book was shallow lacking in detail and appears to have rushed to the publisher. I was throughly disappointed.

I agree with some of the other reviews you would be much better served by purchasing the books on trading written by William O’Neil

1 Star Monster Letdown
Fire up your charting software. Scan for stocks that have gained greater than 200% in the last 250 trading days (1 year). Review. You have just saved yourself $29.00. There is nothing new in this book. O’neil was quoted so many times I began to think this was written by him. I congratulate anyone who has the moxi and staying power to finish and publish a book. That doesn’t mean I have to like the finished product.

2 Stars Very little value added to CANCLIM investors
The book’s title is misleading to say the least. The book offers little new information than his previous book - How Legendary Traders Made Millions. It just simply repeats the same principle in the chart again and again. Buy stock in the break out, pyramid buy more when stock drops to its support level, usually at 21 or 50 day moving average. Sell when the stock has its finally climax run. It could have been a 5 to 10 pages brochure.

If you really want to find out how a monster stock got setup, started and finished, I strongly recommend you read Brad Koteshwar’s book - The Perfect Stock: How a 7000% move was set-up, started and finished in an astonishing 52 weeks.

5 Stars Has REAL Answers
This book was easy to read and contained real answers to many of the questions a salesman would have.

5 Stars Excellent Advice
I cannot put this book down. It is packed with helpful advice on everything to do with selling and keeping those customers. My favorite tip is the fact you cannot truly sell a product you dont own or have tried.

On an aesthetic point, the book fits so well in your hands, the paper is strong, it lays flat, and it even has a little red bookmark! You can tell this is a quality book from the cover, and you can prove its a quality book from the excellent advice contained within the cover.

4 Stars Good Book on Improving Your Sales Skills
“Little Red Book of Sales Answers” by Jeffrey Gitomer addresses questions salespeople may have about their job and techniques to improve skills, particularly in the following areas:

1. Your humor and creativity.

2. Your writing, finding a mentor, and secret of worry-free living.

3. How to cold call and dealing with liars.

4. Closing and dealing with objections.

5. Utilizing the internet to make sales.

6. Ways to establish relationships.

7. Ways to differentiate yourself from your competition.

8. Love what you do and your job will be easier to be successful at!

Throughout the book are free “Red Bits” that you can access through Gitomer’s web site. “Red Bits” are succinct pieces of valuable tid bits of information for particular aspects of selling.

Overall, the book is a good source of information and enjoyable to read. However, there were quite a few examples of salty language that I believed was unnecessary for making points. Brush up on that and I would give the book 5 stars.

Recommended.

4 Stars Advice to investors
This is a great how to book to explain in simple terms the best way to become an investor in commercial real estate. I have read several books like this and have found this one to be one of the best.

5 Stars Real World Education
Gary Eldred’s, Make Money with Affordable Apartment Buildings and Commercial Properties, give you real world approches to investing in Apartments and Commercial real estate. Although I’m sure that there are occations when you can buy no money down and even end up putting cash back in your pocket at the close of escrow, this book will give you what you need to know to deal in the reallity of real estate investing and being one up on your compitition.

5 Stars An Apartment Building Real Estate Book That Doesn’t Try To Sell You a System!
I read a fair amount of real estate books. However, when I choose a book, I try to stay away from the ones that just try to sell you on a system. Those books that scream, “Buy me and I’ll tell you how to make a million dollars in a month from real estate using none of your own money!” I have never found that useful.

Mr. Eldred’s book is not like those books. He is not trying to sell the reader his system. In fact, he even states in the book that systems typically do not work. Sure, you could buy a book from an author living in Southern California that made a million flipping homes between 2004-2007 but is that really going to work in Cedar Rapids, IA? Probably not.

I bought this book after being impressed with Investing in Real Estate, Fourth Edition. (The link is to the Fourth Edition, which I read. Note, however, that there is a newly updated Fifth Edition available now.) In fact, I recommend reading “Investing in Real Estate” before reading this book.

This book is all about multi family residences. It does not discuss buying single family homes since the process for those are different.

What makes this book so valuable are all of the areas that Mr. Eldred touches on that should affect not only how you decide whether or not you want to buy a property but how you see a property’s potential before purchase and then fulfill that potential after the purchase. And it is not just focused on the buying process. He discusses formulating a PVP (Preferred Value Proposition) and using that PVP to guide your purchases. He talks about performing market analysis to locate the right markets, finding the right properties within those markets, determining what improvements will help raise the property’s value and rents, and more. Sure, he has a chapter about working the numbers, but this book is about much more than just running numbers. It is about learning to create the right strategy, find the right markets, ask the right questions and see opportunities that others have missed.

I will be reading this book again because there is just too much valuable insight to try and capture it with just one read. Even if you are someone who owns a couple properties and has been doing this for a little while I believe this book will have you thinking and doing things differently after you read it.

Before I sound too positive, I will point out two minor issues I had with the book:

First, the title is “Make Money with Affordable Apartment Buildings and Commercial Properties.” Mr. Eldred mentions commercial properties a bit in the book but this really is a book about apartment buildings (yes, I realize that apartment buildings fall into the realm of commercial properties but if that’s what he was going after, the title is redundant). If you are looking at buying commercial properties that are not apartment buildings, this is not a fantastic book for you.

Second, he talks a lot in the book about calling up owners of other properties, asking them about units that are for rent, visiting those units, and following up with those owners after a short period of time to see if the units have been rented. To me, if I were an owner of one of those properties I would consider it somewhat bad form for another investor to take up my time inspecting a unit I have for rent if the investor knows he is not going to rent it. Maybe that’s just me and maybe this is an OK practice (as I said I am just getting started in this area of investing), but it doesn’t seem to be the right way to go about it.

In summary, I highly recommend this book. Buy it, read it, and start working on your own system for making money in real estate!

Values Driven Business How to Change the World Make Money and Have Fun Social Venture Network

Values Driven Business How to Change the World Make Money and Have Fun Social Venture Network

Read This Book…if you own or run a business or if you’re thinking of starting one….if you think there has to be more to doing business than just making money….if you feel ”there’s got to be a way” to run a successful business without driving yourself and your employees to early graves….if you want to know how to build a business that will reflect your personal values, not force you to hide them….if you’re studying business and you want to know what business can do at its best….if you’ve been hearing about ”corporate social responsibility” or ”the triple bottom line” and you wonder what all the fuss is about - or if you think those ideas apply only to major corporations….if you’ve read books or articles about corporate social responsibility and discovered they don’t help you meet the real-world challenges you confront in a small or medium-sized business….if you’ve been thinking of investing in ways to treat your customers or your employees better or to reduce the damage you’re doing to the environment but you think your company’s just not big enough to afford it - or if you think your profits will go down if you do….or if you want to understand one of the most powerful new ideas that’s affecting business all over the world today.

5 Stars KEEPS THE FOCUS ON VALUES BRIGHT. EXCEPTIONALLY USEFUL AND INSIGHTFUL!
Based on case studies, this book presents a how-to road map for those who want to stay true to the principles of

(1) NOT producing products in an environmentally damaging way and

(2) treating people right–giving employees dignity, respects and decent pay!

The book includes resources for those who want to narrow the gap between their personal values and business practices. The book addresses the myriad of dimensions of values-driven businesses relating to employees, customers, stockholders and communities. Highly recommended.

5 Stars Ben Cohen Should Know–The Market Rewards Values-Based Businesses
The founding CEO of one of the largest green businesses in the world (Ben & Jerry’s) joins up with the CEO of a boutique consulting firm to show that businesses of any size can benefit from sustainability. In this well-written book, they lay out five dimensions of a values-driven business: relationships between your company and its employees, customers, suppliers, and community. Each of these gets a full chapter, as does the business’s impact on the environment.

The best thing about this book is the set of action steps and checklists to help any entity (business, non-profit, institution, or even activist organization) incorporate a social and environmental agenda while in most cases actually becoming more profitable.

Examples include:

* Five justifications for why socially responsible companies are often more profitable

* Ten-point checklist to determine readiness to start the process

* Seven arguments for paying your employees well (my favorite: it forces the company as a whole to work smarter)

* Five reasons why profitsharing with employees builds a business, and six models to incorporate the idea into practice

* Ten ways to turn your employees into your partners

* 19 specific methods (many of them easy and no-cost) to reduce your company’s environmental footprint

The other thing I love about this book is the use of clear, simple case histories, drawing extensively from the authors’ own history but also from many other companies. You’ll learn, for instance, about Clif Bar’s five-fold bottom line: “the planet, the community, our own people, the health of our brands”; you’ll also learn about Mal Warwick’s extremely innovative charitable programs…Peachpit Press’s amazing vacation policy…Recycline’s commitment to reduce the waste stream…and how all of these and many other social/environmental policies actually help these companies be more profitable.

Shel Horowitz’s award-winning sixth book, Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First, demonstrates how to build a business around ethics, environmental sustainability, and cooperative practices–and how to develop marketing that highlights those advantages.

1 Star Walking the Walk vs. Talking the Talk
What an interesting book, instructing businesses on how to be profitable AND ethical! I wish more people would operate in such a manner. I do, and always have, and now after almost 20 years in business can recognize when someone else (client, supplier) is less than ethical. I avoid them. I wish I had that insight when I first started! With only my vacation day payout and a few thousand in the bank, I started a computer network installation and service company. I was asked to bid on a job for prospective new client. I put a lot of time and thought into it and put in my bid. They asked for more detail, so I gave them that. They asked for specific part numbers, so I gave them that. They asked for an implementation map, so I added that. After a couple of weeks and dozens of pages of instructions…they had all they needed to do the job themselves - and that’s just what they did. They bought all the goods mail-order and pulled the cabling per my freeloaded instructions, same as they re-mapped their servers, changed their operating system license, etc. I learned a lesson that day. If businesspeople can legally (but unethically) steal from you, the usually will. Oh, the name of the company that did this to when I was first starting out? Take a guess…the big hypocrites.

5 Stars Highly recommended!
Using examples from their personal experiences and from a wide variety of U.S. companies, Ben Cohen and Mal Warwick show how companies have incorporated socially progressive and environmental values into their daily business practices. The authors insist that companies can help their communities and make money at the same time, adding a new dimension to traditional business models, which focus only on profits. Although the authors’ enthusiasms sometimes carry them away - for example, they insist that customers who don’t share your values will respect you so much for them that they’ll stay loyal anyway - the “values-driven business” is an idea whose time has come. We recommend this book to business owners large and small who want the benefits of their work to extend beyond just themselves and their stakeholders.

5 Stars A practical guide for turning ideals into reality
I eventually want to start my own apparel business, but I know the industry is rife with ethical abuse. Because of this, I want to run a business that does as little harm and as much good as possible. Until a few weeks ago, I was not sure how to bring that ideal to practical fruition. After receiving “Values-Driven Business” from someone who works for a socially responsible company, many of my questions were answered.

Why am I glad I read the book? Here are some attributes:

1) It is quick to read, enjoyable, and optimistic. No gloom and doom.

2) It is a fantastic overview of socially responsible business. This is NOT a deep, complicated analysis of the topic. It is simple enough for people who aren’t sure where to start and need an introduction, yet has interesting, enlightening examples for someone already familiar with socially responsible business.

3) It is well organized. The authors go over five dimensions of values-driven businesses (some of which I had not considered): employees, suppliers, customers, community (local and global), and the environment. At the end of each section is a list of specific actions that one might consider incorporating into a business to create positive change.

4) The text goes beyond black and white binary opposition, and challenges assumptions about socially responsible businesses (e.g., they can’t make a profit, they make inferior products, etc.).

5) Practical examples of values-driven companies comprise the backbone of the text. This shows the principles at work, and shows that two businesses can have different ways of incorporating values; there is not one “right” way to be socially responsible. Reading about all the different solutions people have devised to make a difference was my favorite part of the book!

I highly recommend this book as a concise introduction that is chock-full of inspiring examples of values-driven businesses in action. It will empower you to make abstract ideals a reality and it provides an excellent foundation for further inquiry!
