5 Stars The Thrifty Girl’s Guide
Ms. Galvez is delightful, insightful and entertaining with a hint of mischievous. Her tips are useful and inexpensive. I enjoy all her books and look forward to the next.

5 Stars Love being thrifty
I came across this book and thought I would give it a try. It is written in such a fun, easy to read manner. The author is funny and the tips were very good. There are also some very creative things that you can do to have “thrifty” spa treatments at home…who knew!?! I loved it and would highly recommend it to others.

5 Stars A great resource for beauty tips that don’t cost a fortune
Call me “soon to be more beautiful!” I refer to this book regularly for solutions to any beauty dilemna using what I already have in my home. What a clever way for Susie to share her secrets on how to live a more beautiful life without breaking the bank! Thank you!!!

5 Stars I Will Use These Tips IMMEDIATELY!!
Wow! I LOVED this book! The beauty tips were VERY practical and easy to do, which is so important to me because like many women I’ve got a jam-packed schedule and don’t like to spend a lot of time or money to look good. Thanks Susie!

- Mary Foley, author of “Bodacious! Woman: Outrageously in Charge of Your Life & Lovin’ It!”

1 Star Waste of Money!
Only if you have never worn makeup in your life or you are a complete idiot, this book might be relevent. Some of the makeup tips are incorrect such as lining your upper and lower lash line which makes your eyes look smaller. Other “brillant tips” are not to wear makeup when your exercising or to put powder on your feet when they sweat. I can’t believe trees died to make this book.

Enjoyed this little book. Full of good ideas to get your business up and running. Especially good for the first time business person with no prior experience. Have enjoyed reading it and putting to use their suggestions.

5 Stars I disagree with the negative review left by Mongopop
I have been in the jewelry making business for over 20 years. I teach jewelry making classes on a weekly basis. One of my students brought this book into class and I found it to be very informative.

Okay, so all I can say about Mongopop’s review is “DUH”. It says the book is for PROFIT…of course the book is going to focus on the business aspect for the majority of the book.

I come across many people that just do not have a creative talent or the ability to grasp concepts. Again…DuH….the book is helping people that probably already have a good base of knowledge about jewelry making. The book includes 8 year old instructions, because most beginnners NO MATTER HOW OLD are at that level. This is a new concept.

Anyway, I just wanted to comment that I was SO disturbed by MONGOPOP’s lack of intelligence…I just had to make a comment.

The book is great…Do not let this one review steer you away from a book that will definately help you.

It really scares me that some people will go out of their way to post negative views. I wonder if Mongopop has ever given a positive review. I doubt it.

1 Star Don’t bother
This is not much of either type of book jewelry or doing craft type home biz. The only thing about this books title is to sell books to people that don’t know much about either of the main items in the title. If you know some about either this tome will not help in any case. You can get the copyright type stuff from the Gov for free, and the legal stuff from your library. Also the laws governing a small biz are so locally written check again with your local library. I do own it and will be trying to off load it.

5 Stars Lots of Great Info!!
Originally borrowed this book at the local library-liked it so well, I purchased it through Amazon-lots of really good information in a friendly easy to read style. I’d recommend it for anyone who is thinking about going into their own jewelry making business.

4 Stars BirdieBeader
“Make Money Doing What You Love”….That is what this book was written for. It was NOT to teach you how to bead. One should already be skilled before attempting to sell their creations or to even think about starting a business. I found it to be informative and helpful, as did the people that I teach. It was easy to understand and well written. I’m pleased to have found this book through Amazon.com. Thank-You. BB

2 Stars Some good tips but nothing earth shattering.
It has been several years since I read this book, but I do remember that I was not incredibly impressed. I was expecting some really strong powerful ideas, but rather remember coming away with a few luke warm tips and ideas. I do believe the book is strongly geared towards helping husbands who are in a traditional job in the corporate world. My husband works in the corporate world but is not in a traditional job so it wasn’t to helpful for us anyway. Good luck in your quest to be a SAHM!

1 Star Waste of my money
Unless you are looking for a way for your husband to get a new higher paying job or get a pay raise, this book is not for you. I am currently a stay-at-home mom and absolutely love it, but am looking for a way to boost our income a bit. The whole book is about techniques to find your husband a better job or to ask for a raise if he is underpaid. There is one chapter on small jobs for extra income, but that’s it.

5 Stars Helped me
I thought this was a great book. It was easy to read and It had lots of helpful techniques and resources including websites and phone numbers to make it easier to increase your income. My wife and I used the info and I did get a raise. I would definitely recommend it. I think the people with negative comments haven’t actually read the book or if they have maybe they are too jaded by life to have hope…

1 Star Agree with the concept- male view absent, poorly written…
This book isn’t for women that want to help their husbands make more money. This book is written for women who are wishful thinkers.

As much as women may not want to hear it- supporting their husband means being an effective and productive household manager. It means being willing to defer gratification “wants” in favor not only of more income, but a steadily growing net worth which is the ultimate foundation for financial security. Women (and men) who are a bottomless, insatiable pit of “need” for destructive assets like automobiles, which the whole time you’re making interest payments on them, are rapidly depreciating will never get ahead with mere “cheerleading” which seems to be where the advice begins and ends in this book.

Sorry, ladies but telling your husbands daily that they’re “Smart enough, good enough, and doggone it- they’re worth it” isn’t a strategy. It’s wishful thinking.

5 Stars Don’t let naysayers keep you from reading this book
Obviously a lot of the reviews written here are about people’s objections to stay-at-home moms, not the book itself. I am a feminist, and there is nothing wrong with helping yourhusband or partner earn more money (man, if you don’t like the idea of staying home with your kids, than don’t do it– don’t tell people to earn thier own money and let the husband stay home! Geez! Feeling a little insecure about your own choices?)

This book is really a great idea, and not a new idea either. This is the attitude my grandmother had about her husband’s work, and she was much more financially stable than most women today. Obviously you want to have your own work skills, bank account, savings account, in case of death or divorce, but for many women who can not possibly do any more penny-pinching, and who either don’t want to use up thier time with thier children running a business from home, or are already doing so and could use more money, this is agreat resource.

Good job to the author! Thank you for writing a book about something that us women have been thinking about.

I think this book is worth its price, even on a stay at home mom budget!

Kids have the right to be cared for by people who love them, and I think any book that helps a women or man stay home with thier own children is a great addition. I am going to recommend to my library that they buy this book.

As for the folks who review this book and criticize moms at home, why are you reading tis book in the first place? Seems thou dost protest too much………….

2 Stars Not over impressed
As a someone getting into soap making for the first time I guess I was looking for something more professional than this. Here is the book in pros and cons.

Pros:

Nice bit on re-batching cold process soaps, which can be essential when using delicate ingredients.

Some nice recipes to stimulate the first timer in soap making.

Good coverage on suggestions of where to sell and how to price your soap.

Good basic coverage on other ingredients such as essential and fragrance oils.

Cons:

A big chunk of the business section is purely American based so guidance on starting your own business in this craft is limited for non-Americans.

A lot of repetition of processes when making the recipes, which made me feel like the author was padding the book out, I would have preferred the instructions once and reference to the relevant parts in the recipes.

Inconsistency in the recipes and guidance, such as the curing time for cold process soaps. The author, at the start of the cold process section, states that CP soaps should cure for at least 3 weeks before re-batching and then goes on to say in the recipes to re-batch 1-2 weeks into the curing time so as to mix in the scent and other ingredients. Likewise, in many of the CP recipes the curing times under the Time heading don’t equate to the curing times in the Instructions.

There are quite a few mistakes in formulas given in the book, such as in sale price calculations and calculation of the amount of water needed to dissolve the sodium hydroxide (an important point, it is only with an example calculation are the instructions clear and the error resolved).

A lot of general writing errors which, for me, interrupt my reading and general pleasure of the book and don’t impart a feeling of professionalism.

Overall, if you are a newbie to soap making then I wouldn’t recommend this book. I also bought Anne Watson’s “Smart Soapmaking” which lays out the method of making cold process soap nice a clear and is a great introduction to this craft. I think the author needs to find a new proofreader, if the book was proofread at all, before she brings out the next edition.

I bought this book for two reasons, 1) to get some ideas for recipes beyond the basics, 2) to get some background in soap making as a business. In all honesty I can say, mistakes aside, it did accomplish the first point and sort of gave me something to think about on the second, but I did walk away from the book once it got into the “Mini-Course in Crafts-Business Basics” as it was not relative to the country I reside in or am from and I don’t like leaving a book unfinished.

5 Stars Excellent Resource For Those Looking To Make Soap & Sell It
I really find this book an excellent resource for soapmaking and small business. I have not tried any of the soap recipes in the book, but they seem straightforward. There seems to be more melt and pour and hand milled than cold process recipes, and there were no hot process recipes. All recipes that use butters describe using a double boiler to melt it but I have read in other sources that a microwave can be just as fine for this purpose, so I found that the recipes could be made even simpler by mentioning this.

This book covers all aspects of soapmaking beyond just the actual ingredients and putting them together. Packaging, labeling, and more are in here.

The business aspect of the book is what I find the most useful. It is concise and easy to understand for those who do not have a background in business. The book reviews taxes, record keeping, selling venues, wholesale, consumer safety law, and a great list of other resources for those who want to continue learning about small business for crafters.

This book is now 10 years old, so I would imagine some of the consumer safety regulation and law in the US has been changed so I would recommend that readers make sure you do go to other resources for this as well.

5 Stars Clean Read
This book covers everything you will ever need or want to know about soap making. It explains the three different methods of making soap and has some very good soap receipes. If you are serious about selling your soap, it covers all that too. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about making soap for fun or profit. I have three different books on soapmaking, and this is the one I always refer back to to refresh myself about my new hobby of making soap.

4 Stars Very informational book - Good for first-timers and the business minded
I have 48 post it notes marking key information throughout this book. I am extremely happy with my purchase. It it filled with a ton of advice from cold process to handmilled to melt and pour to opening your own business, pricing, marketing, selling - you can tell this writer is passionate about soap making.

Her advice is pratical - preparing a work station, creating scents, interesting molds, many handy hints, checklist for craft shows, tips for selling on the web, etc. etc. etc. Now, I know there are a few comments that the recipes aren’t that spectacular, but let’s be honest here….most of us want to create our own recipes anyway, right?!

I’m not into the cold process so I really can’t critique that portion of the book. Yes, about 1/3 of the book is a mini-course in crafts business basics, written by Barbara Brabec - a book within a book. For me this was extremely interesting and information I wouldn’t want to do without.

I sell and buy books on Amazon and although I like to sell my used book, this is not one I will be putting back up for sale. It is here in my kitchen to stay.

5 Stars Great book for newbies
I like this book because she gives a lot of other detailed info that some other books don’t like terminology and hints and tips that others don’t think about (like known allergens for example). This book definitely has the newbie in mind. It was very helpful to me and I WOULD recommend this.

It also has a great list of resources like where to find packaging or essential oils, and even fresh herbs. Pretty much everything you need to get started.

Probably not for the experienced soaper.
