5 Stars Great Stock Market Book
John Boik presents a well thought out method for acquiring wealth. The big money he claims is made in finding those few companies who can change the world. If an investor can recognize these monster stocks and manage them correctly, the result will be life changing wealth. Boik gives the reader a history lesson–that all monster stocks display the same characteristics just the names of the companies and their symbols change.

4 Stars Practical Rules for Growth Stock Investing.
Boik’s term “Monster Stocks” refers to stocks that have at least doubled in price within 18 months. This book describes the practical application of a set of rules for identifying and profiting from such high-growth stocks. These rules involve criteria both for a stock’s fundamentals, and subtle details of price and volume action of the stock and of the general market.

What I liked about the book is that it profiles about 30 such stocks as brief case studies, which include the chart basing setups that may have been evident, key points and characteristics of corrections during the stock’s growth, and indications that presaged of the end of their run-ups. These are accompanied with annotated charts of relevant market indices and of the stocks profiled. The attendant commentary on these particular growth stocks and the events in the markets allowed me to learn by comparing the rules to how I would have reacted in the same situation. Most of the examples occur during the period 1996 through 2006.

Much of the methodology aligns with and makes mention of the Investor’s Business Daily rules as described in their educational material and in Bill O’Neil’s books. This book builds on IBD’s teachings in that it uses the methods to focus on the special case of stocks that at least double in price including the psychological challenges, buying and pyramiding tactics, and the significance of moving-average support.

Boik describes methods that are relatively simple, but adds that the attention to detail and discipline required is not easy. I know from experience that many of us will find it difficult to make a large commitment to a high-growth stock, at least in its early stages, because the characteristics go against much of the conventional wisdom. Many investors will sell such a stock when it makes violent corrections - only to watch it make new highs soon thereafter. Similarly, it takes great discipline to act on the various warning signs and sell even though the stock is making successive new highs and the fundamentals have never been better. Boik does a reasonable job of explaining the details of what to observe, and rules by which to buy, add more, sell or hold these stocks through such observations. Among other things, the rules limit your risk and provide assurance when holding such stocks during their growth phase.

The book concludes with a Monster Stock finding and handling template, and a summary of the Monster Stock rules.

A criticism that led me to rate this book four stars instead of five was that the writing style tended to be wordy and repetitive, making the book longer than it needed to be. Also, the graphics were sometimes difficult to follow, and required some study before I was able to relate them to the text. I was able to endure this however, and found a lot of valuable content.

1 Star Disappointed
I had previously purchased his other two books. The first covered the best US traders (this is a very good book) and the second book covered the US equity market and the best US traders through history, this book also was pretty good in terms of detail and explanation. His current book was shallow lacking in detail and appears to have rushed to the publisher. I was throughly disappointed.

I agree with some of the other reviews you would be much better served by purchasing the books on trading written by William O’Neil

1 Star Monster Letdown
Fire up your charting software. Scan for stocks that have gained greater than 200% in the last 250 trading days (1 year). Review. You have just saved yourself $29.00. There is nothing new in this book. O’neil was quoted so many times I began to think this was written by him. I congratulate anyone who has the moxi and staying power to finish and publish a book. That doesn’t mean I have to like the finished product.

2 Stars Very little value added to CANCLIM investors
The book’s title is misleading to say the least. The book offers little new information than his previous book - How Legendary Traders Made Millions. It just simply repeats the same principle in the chart again and again. Buy stock in the break out, pyramid buy more when stock drops to its support level, usually at 21 or 50 day moving average. Sell when the stock has its finally climax run. It could have been a 5 to 10 pages brochure.

If you really want to find out how a monster stock got setup, started and finished, I strongly recommend you read Brad Koteshwar’s book - The Perfect Stock: How a 7000% move was set-up, started and finished in an astonishing 52 weeks.

4 Stars Short, insightful stories from a successful broker
Being able to trade or carry out a trade successfully is a talent, the ability to write and catch the readers’ attention through 242 pages is a different story. Spooner shows that he has both gifts from God. The stories are really interesing and insightful. A good leisure reading for anyone who has a stake in the investment market.

5 Stars War Stories from a Full Service Stock Broker
“Investing is a psychiatric profession. It deals more with emotion than with balance sheets and income statements.” John Spooner shares that insight at the beginning of the book, and his stories certainly bear out that perspective.

The title of the book is explained in the first story about Big Arthur, who really did just want to fool around. It turns out that stock investing is primarily entertainment for most of Spooner’s clients. If he tries to provide them with good investments, they get annoyed and leave him. He has to be careful in figuring out what their real objectives are. One woman tells him to invest conservatively for current income, then gets angry when he doesn’t beat the S&P 500. She finally quits him.

The stories are done in a style reminiscent of Adam Smith in The Money Game, except these stories aren’t quite as funny or illuminating. They certainly resonate with me, however. I’ve known a lot of people these stories could have been written about.

Spooner’s real opinion is shared succinctly in the middle of the book. “People are mostly good at making money but terrible at investing it.” “And not one of them . . . was capable of managing his or her own money.” As a result, he tells you to hire a broker and to do what the broker says, or fire the broker.

He has three key questions to ask in deciding which full service broker to use. I think you could be misled by these questions, as I was when I hired a talented, well educated man to be my full service broker in 1968. He clearly passed these three tests, and was a nice fellow to boot, yet 80 percent of my money was gone within a year. He put me into three of the worst dogs you can imagine.

For perspective, I suggest that you also read John Bogle’s, Common Sense About Mutual Funds. If you seriously want to make money, buy index funds. If you want to fool around, find a full service broker who will amuse you. The choice is yours.

This book provides a valuable perspective on the stalled thinking that affects people’s ability to invest. You can either make most of these mistakes yourself in the future, or learn them by reading this book. It’s much cheaper to buy and read the book. I suggest that you decide to make money with your money. Save your entertainment for other parts of your life where the cost isn’t so high.

5 Stars Every investor should read it more than once.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. I found it interesting reading, loved the stories which convey the messages clearly, and believe it is full of common sense. It is a sound approach which has served his clients, (of which I am proud to be one), well over the years.

4 Stars Helpful and engaging
Investing can be as much a matter of comportment and attitude as anything else. Spooner’s relaxed, anecdotal style is a welcome departure from the “sure-thing”, exclamatory type of trash that’s been on the bookstore shelves (and in the warehouses!) for the last two years. His advice is (largely) helpful to anyone who chooses to invest rather than gamble. By the way, you don’t end up managing half a billion dollars of other people’s money as an individual stockbroker by blowing smoke at them. Buy the book and read it.

5 Stars Stand on your own two feet as an investor.
Great writing style. I’m surprised to say this about a financial book, but it was a real page-turner.

This book teaches you when to trust your own observations as a consumer an investor, and also supplies a few good rules to fall back on. It’s investment advice, with a bit of personal advice mixed in. There are comical stories which help you realize how insane and irrational our financial markets can be. It helps you understand the psychology of Wall St., while keeping a healthy distance from Wall St.’s incestuous institutions of research.

5 Stars Finally - a book with the real nuts and bolts about how to invest
If you’re looking for a ‘cheerleading’ book about how great real estate investing is or how easy it is to do no-money-down deals, there are plenty of choices. If, like me, you want to see a book that gives real, practical advice on how to invest: finding and evaluating good deals, checking out the property, getting it financed and managing it, buy this one.

This is not a light read, but it is easy to follow and it lays out one of the clearest and most complete paths to investing I’ve seen anywhere. I read it quickly, but will also use it as a reference as I begin investing in mobile homes. If you plan to invest in mobile homes, any one of about fifty tips in this book is going to save you way more than the book’s cost. I wish there was a book like this for every real estate investing sector.

I found this book in a university bookstore, and was later unable to find it in any Borders or Barnes & Noble. However, the author did not use academic language, so I wish it was more mainstream. I see many enjoying this easy, inspiring read. It’s a good introductory book for the eco-minded — businessmen and consumers alike.

5 Stars If you want to make a difference, this book will inspire and excite you
You may not be a CEO or working for a large corporation, but if you feel in your soul that you’re going to change the world, read this book. It is a very business-oriented book and it also gets into specific business tactics and strategies that are green for the bottom line and the environment. However, reading about the success of Gary Hirshberg’s “out-of-the-box” (pardon for the cliche) approach will grease the wheels in your head and inspire you to think bigger and more creatively.

The CE-Yo of Stoneyfield Farm Yogurt shares how he built a hugely successful business by implementing ecologically sound practices. The title sums up the book quite well. If you’re already in business and just starting to think about how to be more eco-friendly, Hirshberg presents his solutions in the language of business. It’s tactical, factual and straightforward.

Stonyfield Farms and their CEO Gary Hirshberg provide an ever improving benchmark for making ecologically-minded decisions while achieving business success. Highly recommended.

4 Stars A practical zealot gives good business advice
Gary Hirshberg is the CE-Yo (I’m not making that up) of Stonyfield Farms where they make great yogurt. I love it because it’s good. It is also organic. For me, the yogurt eater, that is mostly irrelevant.

Hirshberg titled his book, Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World. The subtitle should be a clue that there are two kinds of material in this book.

There are the places where Hirshberg writes as if he’s trying to pass some sort of environmentalist purity test. These are mostly long expository sections that may be of great interest to you. If so, read them. I found them stupifyingly boring most of the time.

If you’re reading this as a business book, you may be tempted to write Gary Hirshberg off as a nut case. But consider the following.

His company makes a great product. The only limit on his production is the number of organically certified cows he can get to supply his farm and meet his standards. And his company makes a lot of money. That’s why you want to pay attention to the other parts of the book.

The other parts of the book are where Hirshberg tells the story of his business and several other businesses including Timberlake and Patagonia. He tells about how Wal-Mart is making “environmentally friendly” changes to its operations because those changes are good business.

Those were the parts of interest to me. They are written in a less formal style. They are mostly stories. And there are a lot of lessons in them about business, business practices, and what both successful businesses and Mother Nature might have to teach us about them.

Here’s an overview of the book.

The first chapter, Natural Profits, begins with the simple, but profound, observation that nature does not produce waste. When nature is functioning naturally, everything thrown off by one process is used by another. Hirshberg suggests that following that principle with business practices will make things more efficient and, thus, more profitable.

He tells us the story of how he wound up at Stonyfield Farms. There’s info on the early stages of the company and how many of his principles about how to live on the planet also helped his company survive and grow. The story of Stonyfield Farms runs through the book.

Mission Control gets us into the mission statement for Hirshberg’s company. Frankly, this is as good a chapter on mission statements as I’ve seen anywhere.

Hirshberg says that a mission statement, in addition to guiding operations, should be simple and enduring. He also points out that Exxon’s mission statement at one time only cited “increasing return to shareholders” as a guiding principle and he describes how that informed the company’s response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Hirshberg makes the point that if you have only one purpose, as Exxon did, it’s relatively easy to make decisions and to be blind to other concerns. But if you have several sub-missions or groups of stakeholders to consider, things get more nuanced. The main story in this chapter is about Patagonia, whose CEO, Yvon Chouinard, says: “Profit is what happens when you do everything else right.”

From CO2 to COno is about Stonyfield’s efforts to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide. There’s excellent material on doing analysis of a problem, seeking solutions and using metrics to gauge success or lack of it. This chapter includes the stories of Timberland, Wal-Mart’s recent changes and Adobe’s efforts to make its campus carbon neutral. Hirshberg describes cost-saving benefits to the corporations.

Hands Across the Aisle has a lot of excellent material on Hirshberg’s marketing methods. In the beginning there was no money for marketing so Stonyfield had to be creative. They were. They also developed the idea of marketing as making a “handshake connection” with everyone. He has important things to say about how the quality of the product is important because that’s what gets customers to come back.

The Delicious Revolution includes the story of Honest Tea. In 1998, Seth Goldman left his job at the Calvert Group of “socially responsible” mutual funds to join Barry Nalebuff and found Honest Tea. Nalebuff was Goldman’s professor at Yale, where Nalebuff is known as an expert on business strategy and game theory. You may know him for his books such as Co-Opetition : A Revolution Mindset That Combines Competition and Cooperation : The Game Theory Strategy That’s Changing the Game of Business and Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life.

No Such Place as Away is all about recycling and re-using and planning in ways that leave you with less to transport somewhere else. A lot of this sounds new, but it’s not. There was a time when Henry Ford demanded that suppliers of engines for his cars pack their engines in boxes made of boards of a particular size. Ford then took the crates apart and used the wood to make floorboards for his cars.

A real strength of this chapter is the description of Interface Carpet. Interface Carpet is two things. It is the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet tiles, a publicly traded company worth almost a billion dollars. It’s also a company with a commitment to sustainability.

Nurturing Those Who Nourish the Earth is about Stonyfield’s dealing with suppliers. There’s good material here about the importance of relationships along the supply chain. Stonyfield Farms may be an “organic” business, but when Hirshberg talks about thinks like marketing and cost analysis, and supply chain relationships, the lessons are solid business.

Future Perfect is Hirshberg’s vision of an ideal future. Since it’s a true “Utopia” or “nowhere” he feels free to let his inner zealot run free. This chapter is awash in unexamined and unsupported assumptions.

Worse, from my perspective, is that Hirshberg tends to present only his own favored solution or technique. So you don’t get any discussion of whether offsets, for example, are actually a good idea or how to make them work better. There are no alternatives in this chapter.

Zealots are often insufferable. Practical zealots have the capacity to change the world. Gary Hirshberg is definitely a zealot, but because he’s also both practical and successful, you will find a lot of good business advice in this book.

This was in no way worth any of the money I paid for. It gave general information on how to open a business. There was little to nothing discussed about the particulars of being a tour operator. And what was discussed was plain common sense. I have since purchased a number of books for a few dollars more that were light years better than this.

5 Stars Good to learn the steps to put a tour together for group
Not only to for start your own tour business. I use book to help start a day trip tour program for seniors at my adult care center early this summer. I organized a chinese-language tour to Las Vegas from Monterey Park, Ca. It worked. My first time organizing and leading a tour. Everyone fun. Good book for someone who need only basic tour planning and budgeting education. I do not recommend if you are in a tour college program to go work for bigger tour company.

If I could rate it 0 stars I would. I recently purchased this book and can say that it was not worth the low price. Even though it will only take you all of 15 minutes to read this book, those are 15 minutes you went get back. This book is about as basic as could possibly be and seems more on the level of a “How To” guide for a second graders “Career Day” book report. It is so basic it is useless. Avoid it and spend your money elsewhere.

5 Stars Forty Years a Speculator
This is an excellent read for anyone interested in microcap investing or any type of investing for that matter. Mr. Carach delivers sound advice drawing on his years of personal experience. The book is written in an easy to understand format and punctuated with a sense of humor that is refreshing and too often missing from most investment books. Take a look into his speculative world of the “Riverboat gambler.”

5 Stars Good Read
A good read for the person who is trying to turn a little money into a lot of money. This book gives you many categories of stocks to consider and the author lists his favorites in each sector.

A word of caution because these are very speculative stocks with high volatility. I like his practice of keeping one third of his portfolio in speculative plays while allocating two thirds to income stocks producing dividends of at least 6%.

Very entertaining with just the facts and no fluff.

5 Stars A WONDERFUL BOOK
This is a wonderful book. I have to agree with all the positive remarks in these 5 star reviews. The strategies are different and unique and I believe will work. I’m sure going to give them a try anyway. But, to me, the background material Mr. Carach includes adds so much to the book. It makes whats been going on in our economy much more understandable and thereby helps you understand why the investment strategies presented will work. The section called “The Wrath of Adam Smith” for example is a real eye opener. I highly recommend this book.

Fred Carach does an excellent job of explaining why following the herd is a bad strategy. Unlike most investment books, this book provides you with a serious strategy based on the author’s investment experience. Fred has put his money where his mouth is and is sharing what he has learned along the way. He outlines his strategy of creating a portfolio of income earning stocks combined with speculative penny stocks. Fred then takes it a step further with a list of choice stocks from his own portfolio along with his reasons for favoring these stocks. If you’re expecting a list of the typical blue chips, you won’t find it here. These are the best stocks you’ve never heard of.

5 Stars Required Reading For Anyone Involved In Advertising. Period.
This book, is amazing.

I see all the lists of required reading for

copywriters and ad persons, but this one wasn’t

on any of them.

I found this book will feeding my book habit at the

local bookstore. I picked it up, and read the

back, then I read the introduction, the recommended

reading list, and found myself halfway through

the first chapter when I decided I better take

it home with me.

Once I started reading, I couldn’t believe how

much information was in this thing. Drew not only

covered the how…he goes deep into the why of advertising.

He not only touches on consumer psychology, but

he gives you it’s practical use. While many books

simple quote studies, Drew quotes them, tells you

why they are important to you, and how to bank off

of them.

He touches on stuff that many books simple don’t

5 Stars Great help for a “tech” guy
As the title say…I’m not an advertising guy. I’m a simple PC repair guy who is good at what he does, fix PC’s.

I did just start out on my own though after almost 20 years in the corporate world and am stumbling through the marketing/advertising part of the business. After reading this book I’ll hopefully stumble a little less.

This book is packed full of powerful yet simple ideas that I have already implemented and had results from in just a few weeks. This book is a must have for any business owner doing his own advertising. I’m also pretty sure it has some great insight to those with more experience than I.

There is also a great reference in the back to the authors must have reading list. I’m already reading My Life in Advertising & Scientific Advertising (free on the web) and plan to continue my studies with the likes of Hopkins, Oglivy, et al.

Thanks Drew for the great inspiration and I look forward to hopefully meeting you someday in your talk circuit.
